Education
We have a rich and diverse teaching programme which is very much consultant led, as well as a new education centre with simulation models and a TOE simulator including the option of assessing pathology for more advanced practitioners.
We regularly run difficult airway, ECMO, MLS, CRISSis, CALS courses and simulations, which are free for our trainees.
We have a body of in-trust ‘human factor’ course instructors, aimed at increasing the non-technical skills required in a multi-disciplinary team complex environment. You can find more information about our local teaching programme
We offer 1 day foundation ECMO course, where the participants have a first taste of what ECMO is, indications, practicalities, and troubleshooting most common complications.
The main training on ECMO is our 3-day ECMO course. This course is offered to different members of the MDT and it is the first step in the development of the ECMO Clinical Nurse Specialist role at Harefield. We aim to achieve an in-depth knowledge around management of ECMO, including VA, VV, hybrid circuits and ECPR. We also provide a holistic experience by including sessions around reflection in practice, family, and patient experience and we often have ECMO survivors joining us during these sessions.
We make the effort to ensure this course is very hands on, including high quality simulations, emergency drills, cannulation training and even ECPR simulation. The faculty includes experts within the field which is essential to give the best experience and qualify of training for the participants.
We also offer regular simulation days, water drills and cannulation training to give an opportunity to reflect on our practice and ensure the knowledge and skills of the team are kept up to date.
