About us
Harefield hospital is a specialist quaternary centre focused entirely on treating patients with diseases affecting their hearts and lungs, it is one of the largest and most experienced centres in the world for heart and lung transplantation.
Harefield remains a designated heart and lung transplant centre undertaking around 100 transplant operations a year as well as long and short term mechanical circulatory support with LVADs, VA and VV ECMO and short-term ventricular assist devices. The unit can offer complex haemodynamic support individualised to the patient and refine it with advanced haemodynamic monitoring.
Around 1000 cardiac surgeries are performed a year including complex cases on high risk patients and the hospital is part of the regional acute aortic dissection rota.
Harefield is a designated Heart Attack Centre performing around 1000 primary PCIs a year including patients in shock or in cardiac arrest. The acute mechanical circulatory support program is embedded into this program enabling multi-disciplinary shock teams to rapidly deploy VA ECMO or percutaneous LVADs as required.
On top of these services the hospital has busy thoracic surgical, radiology and respiratory medicine departments whose patients require critical care services. In 2020 Harefield was awarded the North West London regional transfer hub.
The unit is a member of Intensive Care National Audit and Research Programme (ICNARC) Data shows the standardised mortality ratio (SMR) for Harefield hospital critical care is well below predicted at 0.94 (ICNARC criteria), despite the extremely high severity of illness.

Cardiothoracic Anaesthesia
We have 5 state of art Cardiothoracic Theatres and 4 Catheter Labs. We are experts in complex cardiac and thoracic surgery, including heart and lung transplantation, various ventricular assist devices, we participate in acute aortic dissection rota. Our primary angioplasty service has with one of the fastest ‘door to procedure’ rates in the country. Lab services include complex devices such as ICDs, PFO closures, TAVI and arrhythmia ablations.
We promote enchanced recovery and run regular preassessment and DOSA clinics. Trainees can expect an extremely interesting educational attachment with a high level of consultant support, with opportunities to gain experience in advanced cardiac output monitoring, as well as developing skills in transoesophageal echo.
Intensive Care Unit
There are 39 Critical Care beds in Harefield Hospital (29 level 3 beds), we are also able to look after critically unwell patients on the wards with our 24/7 Critical Care Outreach service. We care for over 1200 patients a year with complex cardiac diseases, pre- and post heart and lung transplantations, patients with cardiogenic shock and post OOHCA and PCI's. We offer complex haemodynamic support individualised to the patient and refine it with advanced haemodynamic monitoring and bedside echocardiography (TTE, TOE, POCUS).
The intensive care consultant team are all experts in cardiac ITU, extracorporeal life support and echocardiography and mentor all trainees to help them gain these skills.
